Live your best [holiday] life

Self-love thinking and behavior in addition to self-care practices are some of the best gifts you can give yourself this holiday season. It’s easy to get caught up in the festivities and lose sight of our feelings and goals.

Two Christmases ago, I had an actual break-down. Leading up to the trip back to home, I had all these ideas in my head about how the week would be. And then of course, none of those pretty pictures happened. I spent a ton of time thinking about the perfect holiday we were going to have and a ton of money trying to make it come true, only to have the week completely fail to live up to the dream in my head.

Nothing tragic happened, but I did get the opportunity to figure out why I felt bad and vow to never go through that experience again.

Here are five tips for living your best holiday life:

  1. Give up expectations: You don’t have to have the perfect party, dinner, or family. Instead of spending time creating picture-perfect ideas in your head, set intentions for how you want to feel and work towards those!
  2. Be vulnerable: Just because it’s the holidays doesn’t mean you have to hide your feelings. Sometimes talking to someone—a loved one, a coach or a health-care professional can make all the difference. It’s okay to have “unfestive” feelings. You don’t have to be merry and bright. Own your feelings, and be vulnerable enough to share the real you!
  3. Set limits: Don’t get caught up in the hustle and bustle of the season! Plan ahead and prioritize your time so you can relax and enjoy the season with people you care about.
  4. Moderation: Try to maintain your regular eating and sleeping habits as much as possible—try not to overindulge (too much…)!
  5. Stay within budget: Finances can become a huge source of stress, especially during the holidays. Make yourself a budget for the season (including party, gift, cooking/baking expenses) and stay within it. If you don’t make a budget, it’s easy to go crazy with spending. My family members and I came up with a present budget for each person/relationship, and we try our best to stick to it. 🙂
  6. Me-time: Manage your wellness through exercise, meditation, quality people time, or other activities. Having different outlets and stress-relieving opportunities can help you cope with seasonal stress.
